BIO BASED: What is bio-based?
From the sugar cane plant to the bottle
"Traditionally, the plastic (polyethylene) for packaging and bottles is made from petroleum. For this purpose, petroleum is successively refined into naphtha and broken down into ethylene. The production of petroleum and processing into plastic costs energy, is harmful to the environment and releases a lot of carbon dioxide. The latter contributes to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Ethanol can also be used to produce ethylene. This raw material is produced, for example, when agricultural products such as sugar cane are allowed to grow.
Plastic can be made from ethanol and it has exactly the same composition and quality as plastic made from petroleum. Durable, non-degradable in nature, but excellent to recycle! The big advantage of bio-based plastic over conventional plastic is that it produces significantly less carbon dioxide (CO2). One major producer even claims that due to the inclusion of the cultivation of sugar cane, the production of 1 tonne of bio-based plastic results in more than twice the weight of CO2 from the atmosphere. As a plant, sugar cane takes CO2 out of the air. The production of Bio Based from sugar cane emits less CO2 than the plant takes out of the air. Thus, one tonne of Bio Based can store up to 3.09 tonnes of CO2 and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
